Features

Windows 7 is integrated with several fascinating new features like Snap feature, which allows for comparing and resizing windows displayed on the desktop, HomeGroup feature, which facilitates in sharing files, printers and other resources in your home network and the new jump list feature, which gives an easy and instant access to the recently accessed favorite files, pictures, and websites etc.

While surfing the Internet, I found a very useful tool, Windows Upgrade Advisor, which plays an important role in determining all the compatibility issues related to the computer’s hardware and software. On running this tool on my PC, it displayed a list compatibility issues with my PC’s hardware device, which may affect the installation of Windows 7 on my PC.

Here are some of the steps to perform a custom installation of Windows 7 on Windows Vista based PC:
STEP 1: Boot the PC with Windows 7 installation disc.
STEP 2: On the “Install Windows page”, click on “Install Now” button.
STEP 3: Agree to install the latest important updates for completing the installation.
STEP 4: Read and accept the license terms and conditions followed by clicking on Next.
STEP 5: You will see a page for “Which type of installation do you want”, click on the option of Custom installation.

Limitations

The entire process doesn’t appear to be smooth sailing. There are still some problems, which may occur when sharing files between Windows 7 and Windows XP computers. The best method to install Windows XP is to perform a clean Windows installation. It is not difficult to do a clean installation. STEP 2. Press F6 if you want to install a third party Raid or SCSI driver. If you are using an IDE Hard Drive then it's not required to press F6.
STEP 3. You will then see a Windows XP Professional Setup screen. You can do a new Windows install, Repair previous install or quit. Since we are doing a new install we just press Enter to continue.
STEP 4. You find End User Licensing Agreement. Press F8 to accept and continue.
STEP 5. Next step is very important. Here, you can create the partition where operating system will be installed.
STEP 6. Choose format the partition using NTFS file system. This is the recommended file system and probably most secure.
STEP 7. Windows will now start formatting drive C: and start copying setup files.
STEP 8. After the setup has completed copying the files the computer will reboot.
STEP 9. Choose your region and language.
STEP 10. Next Type your name and organization.
STEP 11. Enter your 25 product key.
STEP 12. Name the computer, and set an Administrator password. Don't forget to write down your Administrator password.
STEP 13. Set the correct date, time and choose your time zone.
STEP 14. For the network setting choose typical and press next.
STEP 15. Choose workgroup or domain name. If you are not a member of a domain then leave the default settings and press next. Windows will restart again and adjust the display.
STEP 16. Lastly Windows will start and present you with a Welcome screen. Click next to continue.

Pre-installation checklist for Windows XP

If you want to install windows xp on your computer, before windows installation you have check list for installation.

Following Check list

• You have the Windows XP CD.
• You have the product key available. The product key is located on your Windows XP CD case and is required to install and activate Windows XP.
• Your computer hardware is set up. At a minimum, you should connect your keyboard, mouse, monitor, and CD drive. If available, you should connect your computer to a wired network.
• You have Windows XP drivers available. Drivers are software that Windows XP uses to communicate with your computer’s hardware. Most new computers include a CD containing drivers. If you do not have drivers available, Windows XP may already include drivers for your hardware. If not, you should be able to download them from your hardware manufacturer’s Web site after you set up Windows XP.
• If you are reinstalling Windows XP on an existing computer, you need a backup copy of your files and settings. The installation process will delete all of your files. You can use the File and Settings Transfer Wizard to store your files and settings on removable media and then restore them after installation is complete.

How to install Windows 7 on a Netbook

Install the newest version of the Windows Operating System, 7, on your netbook now with little effort. Download directly from Microsoft and load on your favorite Netbook.

Go to the following web link, scroll down the page and select the 32-bit version of Windows 7.

Sign in with your Windows Live account (Have an MSN Hotmail, MSN Messenger, or Passport account? It's your Windows Live ID.)

After you sign in you will get a individual Windows 7 Beta 32-bit Product Key (which you will need later) and Download Now link at the bottom of the page. Select to save the file to somewhere common, Desktop, My Downloads.

Go have some coffee, a meal, heck go to work and come back and maybe it will be finished. Nah it's not really too bad. I'm on a 7 Megabyte download connection and it took about 45min - 1 hour. The files size should be around 2.43 GB's.

After the download is finished you will have a single ISO file that will need to be burned using Nero or BurnAware (Free Download) as I have suggested before.

When you have the completed burned disk we will move on to step 2.

Insert the disk in your optical drive and boot up your computer. On my Dell Mini 9 I press the number 0 to pull up the boot options menu but your start up splash screen may differ. The point is you want to pull up the boot menu and select CD/DVD-RW Drive and hit Enter.

After that Windows will ask if you want to boot from the CD/DVD hit any key...Hit Enter to start the setup.

After the media loads the first setup screen will come up for Windows 7. Select the Language, Time & Currency, and Keyboard or input method here. (English, English (United States), US is the default settings.

Select Next to proceed with the setup.

Select Install now from the center of the screen.

Look over the License Terms then select I accept the license terms from the check box below. Select Next to proceed.

On the Which type of installation do you want? screen select Custom (advanced)

On the Where do you want to install Windows? Select the disk you want to install on, in my case there is only one and it is 7.2GB Select Drive Options from below. Then you want to select Delete, a warning window will come up and you want to select OK. Select Next from the bottom to continue.

Now you will get the Installing Windows screen. The setup will go through the process here and copy files, expand files, install features, install updates and complete the installation. Let the setup work and give it some time. It will look very similar to the Vista Installation setup if you have been through that before. This part took about 45 minutes on my system.

Enter your User & Computer Name when prompted then select next. Enter your your Product Key when prompted then select Next. Select your update settings. Change Time & Date settings if necessary then select Next. Select your Wireless network from the list and security key if applicable. Select Next. Select your computers current location, Home for most users. From the Homegroup screen record the password if you plan on setting this system up with others in your house. Select Next.

Windows 7 will prepare your desktop for first time use and you will be up and running.



Tweak Windows 7 for Netbook Use:

Go to Start => Computer. Right click on Local Disk (C:) and select Properties. In the Properties window select Disk Cleanup from the General Tab. Place check marks in the following boxes; Hibernation File Cleaner, Setup Log Files. Select Clean up system files below. Disk cleaner will open again, make sure the following check boxes are still marked; Hibernation File Cleaner, Setup Log Files, and System queued Windows Error Reporting files. Select More Options from the tab above, Under System Restore and Shadow Copies select Clean up... A warning window will pop up asking, Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point? Select Delete to continue. Select the OK button below and then Delete Files in the Pop up. Now you should have about 1.49 GB free that you did not have before.

Download & Install Updates from Microsoft.

Right Click on the Windows Taskbar at the bottom of the desktop. Select Properties, select the check box to Use small icons then OK.

Go to Start then Right Click on Computer then select Properties. In the System Properties select Advanced System Settings from the left tab. Under Performance select Settings. Now your in the Performance Options window, select the Advanced Tab and under Virtual Memory select Change. Un-check the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives. Select Custom size below and enter the following:
Initial Size (MB): 200
Maximum Size (MB): 512
Select Set then OK. Now you need to Restart to apply the settings, this will save around 400-500 MB on your hard drive and run Windows fine.

On my 8GB Hard Disk I now have 1.65GB Free and 5.30GB Used. Not bad for the newest version of Windows OS!

Activate Windows Vista. Open the Start Menu found on the toolbar, right-click "Computer," and go to "Properties." Click the link labeled "Activate Windows Now.

Follow the steps to install fresh windows XP on your computer

1. Back up all important information before you perform a clean installation of Windows XP. Save the backup to an external location, such as a CD or external hard disk.
2. Start your computer from the Windows XP CD. To do this, insert the Windows XP CD into your CD drive or DVD drive, and then restart your computer.

Note To boot from your Windows XP CD, the BIOS settings on your computer must be configured to do this.
3. When you see the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press any key to start the computer from the Windows XP CD.
4. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to start Windows XP Setup.
5. Read the Microsoft Software License Terms, and then press F8.
6. Follow the instructions on the screen to select and format a partition where you want to install Windows XP.
7. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the Windows XP Setup.
